The definitions in the Collins Unabridged English Dictionary convey meanings with eloquent minimalism. The division of a headword’s different meanings (homographs) into separate numbered lines is a definite improvement on this dictionary’s main competitor on Mobi, the Chambers. The Collins has fewer headwords than the Chambers – 123,000 (8th Edition) vs. 160,000. (The 500,000 words stated in the description for the Collins 9th Edition is misleading, and is arrived at by adding headwords, definitions, references, phrases and examples.) There are surprising omissions – no ‘abduce’, for instance – but interesting new words, such as ‘Frankenfood’, GM-modified food. Entries for placenames have more details that those of a basic gazetteer, and are up-to-date. Because plurals aren’t written in full, they can’t be found in searches (although some plurals, such as ova, have their own headword). There is no IPA pronunciation guide. The included thesaurus is comprehensive – ‘paraphernalia’ yields 15 results, including ‘clobber’ and ‘impedimenta’. It’s a shame there isn’t a button to toggle between the two books. The Collins bundle, though it lacks many of the archaic and rare words of Chambers, is a sharp and current resource – an asset to have in your pocket.
