Description:

Ellie Conway is an FBI agent who works serial crime cases. As a hobby, she runs an internet poetry chat room. When someone tries to kill her, it soon becomes obvious it’s linked to her after-hours pursuits on cyberspace. Matters become complicated when her assailant turns up dead in the trunk of her car. As the chat room’s patrons start dropping like flies, she realizes there is something far deeper going on than first thought. Despite an abundance of crime scenes, no evidence can be found to identify a motive or perpetrator. The death toll rises and eventually includes her best friend and her own mother, before a chance remark from twelve years prior surfaces to provide the first real clue, which unravels the killer’s twisted goals.

Publisher's opinion:

Readers who enjoy suspense and FBI crime thrillers will find Cat Connor’s novel killerbyte to be right up their alley. This is the first of several stories featuring FBI agent Ellie Conway, and it is well-written, gripping, and highly entertaining. Not only is the action realistic and exciting, but the mystery is well-executed enough to leave readers guessing for the entire duration of the novel, and the characters are developed in such a way as to render them both real and familiar. Before I picked up this story, I had never heard of Ms. Connor, but by the time I finished killerbyte, she had definitely increased her fan base by one. In all, I found killerbyte to be an excellent read. The tension created by the suspense is so heavy as to be almost tangible, the action is both exciting and gruesome, and the mystery is extremely well-executed. Add to this Ms. Connor’s polished and enjoyable writing style, and you have a book that is almost guaranteed to please. The second novel in this series featuring Mac and Ellie is titled Terrorbyte, and I am definitely going to have to get my hands on it in the future. Reviewed by BookWenches

Reviews:

excellent debut - (Tara Staley on 29 June 2009)
FBI Agent Ellie Conway is not only a special forces tough-gun, but a poetry chat room aficionado who soon finds herself pursued by someone calling himself the Son of Shakespeare. As members of the chat room start showing up dead and mangled all around her, Ellie and her comrades (along with her blooming love interest) have to use cyberspace tactics to isolate and identify exactly who SofS is--because the "poetry" he leaves at the scene of each crime lets her know that she could be the next victim. Cat Connor's story is fast-paced, with flowing narrative and well-defined characters who have plenty of wit. A classic 'whodunit' novel, the reader is guessing up until the end about the killer's identity, and Connor does a very good job using her police background to make the story come to life. A wonderful debut from a wonderful author--keep watching for more to come from the talented Ms. Connor.

Fabulous - (Chrissy Gordon on 2 June 2009)
A riveting, fast-moving book full of larger than life characters. Written with great style and a sense of humour. Can't wait for another in the series. Miss this book at your own peril.

Amazing! - (Joshua Hall-Shelley on 9 May 2009)
The characters are bought to life in this book by awesome imagery and hilarious dialog mixed together with plenty of death.

Finally a decent thriller - (Lee pletzers on 12 April 2009)
Awesome book from newbie Cat Connor. The characters are well drawn and the plot kicks along at a rocking pace. Ellie is a hard woman but I think there is another side to her. The idea behind this book is good and it executed very well, with great pace and scenes that will set your eyes on fire from the speed of the action. I hope there are more Ellie Conway books on the way...

A romping good read - (Joan De La Haye on 11 April 2009)
I couldn't put it down. It thrilled from start to finish.
