Description:
As the most gifted battle unit in the Confraternity of Sentient Races, Five-Red is entitled to nothing but the best: the best bunk, the best food, and the best pleasure units 'Tween has to offer. That is as it should be. After all, he is being groomed for the position of Fifth Division Commander. But on campaign planet Bravo-335 he discovers a piece of alien technology that turns his life upside down. It holds the thoughts of a supposedly unthinking beast – a member of the very race the Confraternity's army has been sent out to exterminate. Suddenly, he knows the Confraternity's computer is eliminating intelligent races. And with that knowledge, he becomes a hunted man. Yet the Confraternity must be stopped. The alternative is the extinction of every intelligent race throughout the universe.

Reviews:
When mankind discovered ‘Tween (a state of existence
equidistant from all times and places in the continuum) it opened
new opportunities for exploration – and conquest. Soldier of
‘Tween is the story of Five-Red, a battle unit of the
Confraternity of Sentient Races. It is the story of the fall of an
empire and the formation of a new way of life. In the end,
though, there are but two questions: Who exactly is Five-Red,
and who – or what – controls the Confraternity?
Soldier of ‘Tween is filled with fascinating aliens and cultures. It
delves into the nature of reality as Five-Red slowly uncovers the
secrets of ‘Tween. The only annoyance is that Five-Red's future
and his importance are clearly shown way before the end of the
volume, and instead of slowly and gracefully being led into
discovering his destiny Five-Red is thrust into his role by other
characters. (Though some readers may well enjoy such a
technique.) Soldier of ‘Tween is a quite enjoyable book
reminiscent of old-time science fiction novels both in plot and
writing style.
