Description:

“Virus hunter” Christopher Dicken is a man on a mission, following a trail of rumors, government cover-ups, and dead bodies around the globe in search of a mysterious disease that strikes only pregnant women and invariably results in miscarriage. But when Dicken finds what he’s looking for, the answer proves to be stranger—and far deadlier—than he ever could have imagined. Something that has slept in human DNA for millions of years is waking up.

Molecular biologist Kaye Lang has spent her career tracing ancient retroviruses in the human genome. She believes these microscopic fossils can come to life again. But when Dicken’s discovery becomes public, Lang’s theory suddenly turns to chilling fact. As the outbreak of this terrifying disease threatens to become a deadly epidemic, Dicken and Lang must race against time to assemble the pieces of a puzzle only they are equipped to solve—an evolutionary puzzle that will determine the future of the human race . . . if a future exists at all.

Publisher's opinion:

"WOW! What a splendid (scary) notion: a human upgrade! What a superb plot! Darwin's Radio is bloody damned good."
--ANNE MCCAFFREY

"Bear is one of our very best, and most innovative, speculative writers."
--New York Daily News

"Superb . . . Bear's novel is frighteningly believable with a lot of clearly explained hard science, but the personal struggles of the well-realized characters keep everything on a human level."
--Focus

"Bear is a writer of passionate vision."
--Locus

"Darwin's Radio scores a high rating on the thrill monitor."
--Birmingham Post (England)

"Absorbing and ingenious."
--Kirkus Reviews

Reviews:

Truely outstanding - (Martin Görner on 6 November 2003)
I have reviewed quite few books on Mobipocket already and it is a rare thing for me to award a 5/5, but Greg Bear definitely deserves it. Truely believable characters, plural story threads that interweave until they meet, and above all a solid scientific basis are what makes this book outstanding. Then of course the science is bit far-fetched but that is the essence of science-fiction, isn't it?
The previous comment probably comes from a reader, brainwashed by american TV shows, who cannot anymore put up with a minimal amount of logic, science and reasonning. Well this is fortunately not the case of the author who did not skip any piece of his homework to deliver a story interesting even from the scientific point of view.

A Gynacological Text Book - (Paul on 31 October 2003)
A tedious book that is not quite sure if it is an A level biology text book replete with detailed, probably correct but very boreing detal and an amateurish Mills and Boon Love story. The juxtaposition of event (the discovery of an Ice neadathal at the same time as an eruption of DNA in the 21st century that the ICE man experienced is not just sily it is so far removed from believiebility that Captain Kirks transporter is more believable. The whole is wrapped around a conspirecy story about the big drugs companies and the state conspiring together that is about as original as Goldilocks and the three bears. Finally the detailed descripitons of gynacology and childbirth seem to be in their to show the reader how PO the author is and how he realy understands woman. The ending is pure rip off from John Wyndhams Midwich Cuckoos. The Characters are flatter and less believable than the figurs in one of my son's pop up books. Strong powerful independant woman at the start becomes earth mom at the end. Save you money.
