This is a story of a father and son and their reunion after sixteen years. Billy Kagan has lived overseas for a decade following a separation from his wife and son. He has returned to New England to live a life of seasonal employment. His isolation from the mainstream is self-induced and broken only by his dog, Casey, his workmates, and two women, Mandy Barnes, a manager at a local ski slope, and the Old Woman, a former physician who lives in the woods around French Pond. Mickey Kagan has been raised by his grandmother, a freelance journalist, after his mother's tragic death. Her research takes them to Venezuela, where Mickey's friendship with a local girl, Cata, teaches him valuable lessons about life and love. Upon their return to the USA with Angela, the two misfits, Mickey and Cata, take to the road on a Kawasaki 650 to find his father.
