IDPF has been working on a new revision of its ebook standard.
http://www.idpf.org/2007/ops/OPS_2.0_0.984_draft.html

this is big stuff, and they expect to have the OPS/OPF standard made a recommendation in summer 2007.

Epub is a zip file consisting of several files.

Does mobipocket plan to support the conversion of .epub files directly into mobipocket (or encrypted mobipocket files). How would this be implemented on the mobipocket side?

Does anybody have some suggestions/guidelines about how this ought to be done in mobipocket until there is such support.

Thanks!

Mobipocket Reader Desktop supports .epub files for a few months now ( http://www.mobipocket.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5422&highlight=oebzip )

Thanks for your concern.

Regards,

Aurélien

Thank you.

The previous thread mentions support for the oeb packaged zip file. I think .epub is a little different because it includes support for Open Publication Structure (OPS) xml files. I don't know if they are very different from the original oebps files. I'll be testing over the next few weeks.

BTW, I don't understand why it would be supported on the desktop reader but not the pda reader. Isn't the entire purpose of mobipocket to allow reading on mobile devices?

I'd love to buy a ebook reader that supports mobipocket and several other formats. NAEB ebook reader is supposed to be out fairly soon; l've stopped holding my breath waiting for the kindle.

I'll be happy to know your conclusions about this afterwards.

Yes it is. The point is it takes time to develop/test a new feature on each mobile.

But it is clear it is an idea we will not forget.

Thanks for your feedback.

Best regards,

Aurélien

Hello -

I'm interested to know if books conforming to the IDPF 2.0 specification created for Adobe Digital Editions can be imported and opened Mobipocket 6.0 desktop. In support of this question, I downloaded two XHTML Digital Editions titles from this URL: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/library/

And attempted to import and open the books with Mobipocket desktop - unsuccessfully. The books I attempted to open were Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Thirteen Moons

I took the packages apart and found that they are, indeed conforming instances to the IDPF 2.0 specification.

So why can't I import and open them with Mobipocket Destop? The error message I get is: "Error while exporting."

Why am I trying to do this? I am interested specifically in attempting to build an IDPF 2.0 compliant .epub file that can be opened by Adobe Digital Editions, Mobipocket Desktop, and one other IPDF 2.0/NIMAS/DAISY compliant reader (as yet to be identified). The effort is to see if I can create one .epub file that will work across eBook software packages AND NIMAS/DAISY compliant software readers.

Please let me know if there's anything I should specifically be trying to get an IDPF 2.0 conformant file to successfully import and open in Mobipocket Desktop V6.0. Also, if I can't do this in V6.0, is there anyway for me to apply to a Mobipocket beta program so that I can get access to a version that does support the IDPF 2.0 standard?

Thanks in advance,
Jean K.

Our software does not handle all IDPF 2.0 features yet.

As soon as we start implementing its native support , I will contact you from here in order to let you participate to the beta versions if any.

Thanks for your feedback.

Kind regards,

Aurélien

Great! Can you share the schedule for the next round of betas? That will be helpful for me to know.

Thanks for confirming my hunch and inviting me to try the beta.
