MOBIPOCKET,

ITS A TOTAL SHAME THAT YOU HAVE NOT YET MADE THE IPHONE SCENE. I HAVE DOZENS OF BOOKS AND PLAN ON BUYING MORE BUT DO NOT PLAN ON CARRYING A POCKETPC WITH ME. THE IPHONE IS THE PLATFORM OF THE FUTURE, APPLE HAS TAKEN THE NUMBER ONE POSITION IN SMARTPHONE SALES WORLDWIDE AND MANY OF YOUR CUSTOMERS HAVE MIGRATED TO THIS PLATFORM. TO NOT MAKE MOBIPOCKET AVAILABLE FOR THE IPHONE IS KEEPING YOUR CUSTOMERS HOSTAGE OF A DEVICE SPECIFIC READING MACHINE AND THIS IS NOT GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE ON YOUR PART. THE PHONE INDUSTRY IS ALREADY MESSING WITH CONSUMERS BY FORCING THEM TO USE A SPECIFIC NETWORK WITH A PHONE THEY SELL (WHICH SHOULD NOT BE THE BUSINESS OF NETWORK PROVIDERS) AND NOW MOBIPOCKET IS FALLING INTO THAT TRAP OF PROMOTING POCKETPC'S AND OTHER OUTDATED DEVICES BY FORCING ITS CLIENTS TO USE THEM AND THIS SHOULD NOT BE.

WE NEED MOBIPOCKET FOR THE IPHONE AND FOR THE MAC....PERIOD....OR YOU WILL LOSE CLIENTS EVERY DAY THAT PASSES!!!

THANKS

Clearly, Mobipocket will have to release a client now.

Someone has posted an ultimatum in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.

Ha ha ha too bad Mobipocket doesn't read these forums. Cause if they did we would already have the iPhone version. But lets see if I can pinch them where it hurts. My understanding is thet Mobipocket is a French based company, if that's the case we are dead because I live in France and I can tell you one thing, the concept that the client is king in America does not exist here, clients are disposable annoying entities that get in the way of your coffee break, croissant and three hour lunches. So to all reading this forum, go find yourselves another Ebook provider and don't waste anymore time here, this is a DEAD END.

When I phoned the President of Mobipocket to ask about it a couple months ago, in my capacity as a TeleRead journalist, he said they couldn't talk about what they were working on, but that they were aware of the great demand in the forums.

Maybe I should write something for TeleRead about it. Never got around to it at the time I called, due to breaking my leg and having to spend time in the hospital after that.

I checked their ContactUs section to confirm they are a French company and I pushed my curiosity into their job postings only to discover that they are looking to hire an engineer with low and behold PC and MAC knowledge......could this be a ruse to quite us forum nags or are they really thinking of doing it? But if they haven't hired the guy to do it yet this is going to be a long and painful road.......

I've written an article gathering all the information I've been able to find about the lack of iPhone, Mac, and Linux Mobipocket reader apps:

http://www.teleread.org/blog/2008/12/02/missing-iphone-mobipocket/

Hope you find it worthwhile!

Hey Chris, great article
You interrupted my viewing of the XFiles, I want to Believe movie I was watching.....hahahha what a coincidence don't you think? You sure know your stuff and I like how you did your homework and research. Thanks for adding my two cents in your story. So now with my ALL BOLD POSTING and your public outbreak of the Amazon/Mobipocket conspiracy we definitely should get our iPhone reader.....before oh lets say 2070...perhaps.....hahahaha

Gotta go back to see the end of my movie, oh and bookmark your Blog as I did not know about it.

Thanks

Jose

Too bad, Mobipocket still has the largest selection of Spanish-language e-books, but eReader is the future:

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/12/03/stanza-adds-licensed-ereader-content-for-iphone-booklovers/

eReader has licensed the ability to open protected books to the makers of Stanza (I will keep using eReader for iPhone, but it's nice to have options!).

You know what I find annoying here, it's the lack of respect and good manners on the part of Mobipocket. I contribute to many forums in all types of areas and one thing is constant, the owner of the forum is always present and acknowledges the forum users existence. Here, NOTHING, NADA, RIEN total silence and ignorance of the client's existence. This is insulting to clients taking their time to feedback to a provider so that he can make more money from them. I will be leaving now and promise not to post again and will forget about Mobipocket alltogether.

Felix Leclerc a well known poete in Quebec once wrote. "Il y a tant de mépris dans l'indifférence". English translation would mean, "There is so much contempt in indifference."

I have been reading the forum because I made the mistake of buying a mobipocket book thinking I could get it on my ipod touch through bookshelf, after I had problems... found an article from May 2008 that said:

"Mobipocket will be introducing an eBook client for the iPhone later this year according to Martin Gorner, president and CEO of Mobi. MobileRead got the information at the IDPF conference where Gorner spoke".......it would be nice to know WHEN Exactly.

But I have been unable to find anything on the website about it. It's So fustrating, I primarily buy ereader books and would shop at mobipocket except I don't want to read on my computer just my IPOD.
There's software I got from itunes called iphone bookshelf that's supposed to read mobipocket....i got the e-book on the bookshelf program, then when I try to open it it tells me that this device is not authorized to display the selected file ARRRRG.....I thought this might have to do with the PID, I have mobipocket on my pc ...and I try to add my ipod to the list as all the faq's say the PID is in the about menu of the device..

..I can't add the ipod without a PID and I cant find the PID until I add the ipod onto mobipocket software on my pc?!!
The software's THERE to read the book I bought on the ipod....But I can't use it because of the PID.....And the whole thing wouldn't be a problem if mobipocket would just come out with it's own app....I'd even Pay Money For it as would many other consumers I am sure! What's the Holdup? Aside from losing customers to support biased interests that is.

Anyone have any idea how to get the PID? or around the problem....
Or you know mobipocket could just come out with a simple app to read it's books.......

You will NOT be able to read the book on the iPod Touch since Bookshelf has support for Mobipocket files that are NOT ENCRYPTED. If the book asks you for a PID, then it is encrypted, and you will need to wait for Mobipocket to release an official iPhone/iPod Touch app that is able to open encrypted books, if there is ever released...

Yeah, it's too bad about that. If only there were some way to get rid of DRM…

FBReader has a beta of a Mac desktop reader. It will read unencrypted Mobipocket files on OS X. You'll have to find some way to deal with the encrypted ones, but solutions are out there if you look for them.

Meanwhile, I was giving Amazon the benefit of the doubt in the story I posted the other day, but I have come into some information that suggests that Amazon may be responsible for the delay in an iphone Mobipocket reader after all.
